Big Sur

Tuesday, October 8, 2013

Jane and I took a roadtrip to Big Sur at the beginning of September, here are some snaps:

Dessert buffet at this godawful truck stop restaurant in Oregon called "Country Pride". Don't make the same mistake and go there. And also don't make the same mistake of ordering chicken fried steak with hash.

Funny contrast: what we ordered at Tartine with Andy and Vivian in San Francisco. We stayed with these guys for a couple of days (thanks again!) and had some good hangs and ate such delicious food.

Big Sur.

Beaches in Big Sur are so windy and this is what we always looked like there:

Snack.

Tent setup. This was the best spot - right on the cliff overlooking the ocean, waves lulling you to sleep. We got this spot thanks to Jane being totally on the ball.

Oregon Coast. Gotta say, it's really beautiful along there, almost even moreso then Big Sur. The beaches were a whole lot less windy and the colors were somehow nicer shades. And man, when it rained and the fog rolled in, everything would become so much more saturated and so moody and twin peaks-y, it was so great.

Ace hotel in Portland. We were there to see The National.

Jane asked me what drew me so much to Big Sur and I told her that from what I've heard, it's this really nice place that seems to restore and heal a lot of people that go there. And I would say that us going there and driving and camping a lot on the way, it made me see that I could do so much more then I thought I could and yes, it was really beautiful and I am glad that I got to do it all with her.

Delancey

Menu taken from Orangette for the restaurant Delancey in Seattle, Washington.

I love this menu. I straightforward names of the pizzas, I like how focused the flavors on the pizza are, and I just absolutely love love love the sound of the desserts. For most sort of European (or to be un-politically correct, white) restaurants, I tend to gauge how good I think the restaurant is based on what the desserts are. I know it sounds so insanely simple, but the idea of a organic raspberry yogurt popsicle makes me swoon along with chilled peaches in wine. I just imagine the pinkness of the raspberries and the freshness of them and having them in a cold popiscle after eating pizza on a summer day sounds pretty more than good to me.

Even though I've never been to this restaurant (and probably won't get to it for a bit), I am already in love with it as well. Maybe it's because I have been following it's progress on Orangette and had read how Molly and her husband started with wide-eyed hopes and a nameless empty space into this beautiful, classic, and undoubtedly what will be an insanely popular restaurant. I feel invested in it just by reading about it from start to another start, and I feel insanely happy for these people (almost to the point of weepy if I stare at a picture too long) even though I have never met them and I bet once I get to the restaraunt I'll feel insanely awkward and creepy for having these feelings and stare at (but enjoy) only at my pizza and popsicle (or a different dessert depending on when I'm there).

So I'm gonna leave it at that, and if you ever go to Seattle, Delancey yonder!

i was absolutely there.

I went to Portland and Seattle with Maggie this reading week and this is kind of what it looked like:

I end on Red Lobster. First meal there in yeeears, and it was good for about 5 bites. But the biscuits, still as good as ever.

I am trying to switch to Wordpress because I want to show you guys songs I really love and Blogger has an insanely ugly app for it. But man, Wordpress is confusing, yes? Or is it just me. For now, it's Blogger for life.
